In memoriam: Don Welbourne

27 December 2022

Scunthorpe United is saddened to learn of the passing of former defender Don Welbourne, who made over 250 appearances for the club between 1966 and 1976, at the age of 73.

Don was born in the town and began his career as an apprentice with the Iron, making his debut as a 17-year-old in September 1966.

He then established himself in the first team a couple of years later, spending seven seasons as a regular, and was part of the Fourth Division team that famously knocked First Division Sheffield Wednesday out of the 1969–70 FA Cup on Wednesday's own ground.

Before injury ended his professional career in 1976, Welbourne played for the Boston Minutemen, alongside the legendary Portuguese footballer Eusébio, as they won the Northern Division of the North American Soccer League in 1975.

Our thoughts are with Don's family and friends at this sad time.
