Report: Iron U18s 4-0 Huddersfield Town U18s

2 October 2021

The Iron's Under-18s were 4-0 winners at home to their Huddersfield Town counterparts on Saturday morning.

United started off really well, playing on the front foot and with a good tempo, and could have scored within 15 seconds of the kick-off after a shot was blocked for a corner.

Scunthorpe went 1-0 up after 15 minutes as Cameron Wilson (who played alongside Dan Gallimore as part of new Youth Alliance League rules which means teams can play a maximum of three first year professionals in a game) went through on the goalkeeper, one versus one, and slotted the ball away perfectly.

They then doubled their lead in the 25th minute when Ben Franklin picked the ball up on the right side of the box, drove forward and then shot diagonally across and into the far corner.

Early in the second half, the Iron goalkeeper Jake Balme played a good ball to Josh Robertson just outside the box. He headed it on, and Wilson was running in behind, striking his second of the game on the half volley from his left foot, with a brilliant strike into the far corner.

Then, in the 72nd minute, it became 4-0 as Oliver Lobley, playing left-sided centre-back, got the ball midway in the away side's half, and drove forward before unleashing a shot from just outside the box which flew into the far corner.

On 79 minutes, Harry Lewis did similar, receiving the ball and beating two players on the edge of the box before hitting the crossbar with a shot.

"The lads were fantastic and played some really good football," said academy manager Tony Daws.

"Huddersfield are a good team who pass the ball well but we were really 'on it' today. We were disappointed after last week's result because we didn't get to the standards we're capable of, but the lads have worked really hard in training this week and the performance reflected that - full of energy and running, and we created enough chances to win two games.

"There was a lot of quality from the lads, and we're delighted because they were fantastic to watch."
