Scunthorpe United is saddened to learn of the passing of vice president and former club doctor Brian Heywood.
Born in Oldham, Lancashire, he was an avid Oldham Athletic fan, and came to the area to work at Scunthorpe General Hospital as a Consultant Gynecologist in approximately 1977, working with Miss Stringer.
The Heywood and Stringer combination would be a legendary one in the field, helping hundreds of patients over their active years.
Brian would assume a role of Club Doctor at Scunthorpe in the years that followed before being voted on as a vice president in October 1989, along with Dr John Zacharias, who was the other club doctor at the time.
He would use his expertise in the role, covering both first team and reserve team fixtures, never charging a penny for his services.
With a vested interest in both sides, he would look forward to games between the Iron and his beloved Latics and would often be asked for his preferred result, which was a draw.
Brian, who lived in Whitton, leaves behind his wife Nell, who he has been caring for for a number of years and two sons. He will be remembered as a well-respected, articulate family man with a brilliant sense of humour.
The thoughts and condolences of everyone at the club are with Brian's family and friends.
