Lee Swabey to referee Colchester United away clash

28 January 2021

Lee Swabey will be the man in the middle for the Iron's away Sky Bet League Two clash against Colchester United on Friday.

The Devon-based official will travel to the JobServe Community Stadium for his 19th game of the campaign and his ninth game in League Two. The current season is his sixth in the EFL.

His first game of the campaign was the Carabao Cup tie between Oxford United and AFC Wimbledon which finished 1-1 at the Kassam Stadium. The U's won 4-3 on penalties and one caution was issued. Meanwhile, his latest game was last Saturday as he oversaw Port Vale's 3-1 home defeat to Walsall. Four yellow cards were issued in the game, the most he's shown in a single game so far this season.

He's taken charge of the Iron on just four previous occasions, two of which against Gillingham. The latest of those fixtures came in November when he oversaw the game at Oldham. Across the three games, he's shown nine yellow cards and one red.

Meanwhile, he's refereed Colchester on six occasions, with five of those coming on their home soil. His most recent trip to the JobServe Community Stadium was last month when he took charge of their 2-1 win over Grimsby Town. In total, across the six games, he's issued 19 yellow cards and one red.

Swabey works for the Cornwall Football Association as Referee Development Officer and began his refereeing journey at just 17-years-old, completing the FA Referees course with Devon FA and building his experience officiating in the DJM and Plymouth & West Devon Football Leagues. He then progressed into the Devon League as a Level 4 Referee (now the South West Peninsula League), spending a year at his level before being promoted to Level 3.

In 2019-20, he took charge of 27 games, issuing 88 yellow cards and five reds. So far in this campaign, he has officiated in 18 encounters, showing 41 yellows and no reds.

On Friday, Swabey will be assisted by Garry Maskell and Darren Blunden, while Leigh Crowhurst has been appointed as the fourth official.
