The Lancashire-based official will travel to Vale Park for his eighth game of the season and his first in Sky Bet League Two.

In what is Doughty's second season in the EFL, he has already been promoted to the Select Group Two group of match officials and is most predominantly refereeing in the Championship this season. Incidentally, the Iron had him in charge for his first-ever EFL match back in August 2019 at Cheltenham Town, showing two yellow cards as United lost 4-1.

He also arrived in the EFL at the first time of asking following his promotion to the National List of Referees after just one campaign on the National League.

A PE teacher by profession, until becoming a full-time referee at the start of this season, he began refereeing in 2007 and was handed the play-off semi-final between Salford City and Eastleigh in the National League in 2018-19 before taking charge of the League Two play-off semi-final second leg between Cheltenham Town and Northampton Town at the end of last season.

His most recent game came at the weekend at the Stadium of Light as he oversaw the encounter between Sunderland and Lincoln City in Sky Bet League One, showing two cautions as the Black Cats ran out 3-1 winners.

He's taken charge of the Iron once more in addition to his first EFL game. That came in January when the side won 3-1 against Manchester City Under-21s in the EFL Trophy. In total, he's shown three cautions in those two games.

Tuesday will be his fourth trip to Vale Park as referee with his previous Valiants appointments all coming at their home. He's shown 11 yellows in those three games with Port Vale winning twice and drawing the other.

Last season, he took charge of 27 matches showing 82 yellow cards and two reds. So far in this campaign, he's taken charge of seven games, showing 17 yellow cards and no reds.

On Tuesday, Leigh will be assisted by Paul Hodskinson and Mark Dwyer, while Matthew Jones will assume the role of fourth official.
