Rory McArdle was thrilled to right some wrongs in a 3-0 win over Sunderland in the Leasing.com Trophy.

The Iron showed resilience to bounce back from a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Crawley Town in the FA Cup at the weekend.

He told iFollow Iron: “If you don’t get the right result, it’s a chance to put it right. Credit to everyone, that’s exactly what happened.”

He praised the strike force as United netted three goals against the League One outfit.

“With the strikers we’ve got, when the chances come they hit the back of the net at the minute,” he said.

“It’s good to get a win against a team a league higher. We knew how difficult it was going to be and if we weren’t at it, it would be a tough night.

“We started the game well and played some good stuff. To come away with a 3-0 victory is very pleasing.”

McArdle reached 100 games in a Scunthorpe shirt and he hopes he will play many more for the Iron.

“It’s nice to hit that milestone,” he added. “I want to play as many games as possible!”

The defender is now hoping the Iron can record their first away league win of the season at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

He said: “It’s getting spoken about quite a lot. Our mindset hasn’t changed; we’ll be going down there and treating it like any other game.

“Hopefully we’ll come away with a positive result and put it to bed.”
