Wallace hails fans following play-off heartache

18 May 2018

Murray Wallace thanked the fans for their unwavering support, after the Iron’s 2-0 away second leg loss saw Rotherham progress to the League One play-off final.

The 25-year-old centre-back was devastated about the result but was quick to thank the fans for sticking with them and helping the Iron have a surge into the play-offs during the closing weeks of the season.

Wallace discussed the supporters, this season overall and preparations for next season in an interview with iFollow Iron.

ON HIS FEELINGS FOLLOWING THE MATCH...
MW: I’m just devastated. I think that everyone in the squad is. We had belief again that we were going to at least take it a step further and go to Wembley. However, it hasn’t worked out like that and everyone is gutted.

ON THE TWO LEGS…
MW: I don’t think that we played great in the home leg and we conceded some sloppy goals. However, we kept ourselves in it. We showed great determination to get ourselves back into it and I think that we did okay on Wednesday too. They made it hard for us to play and we couldn’t break them down.

ON RORY WATSON’S PERFORMANCE…
MW: He’s been brilliant. He played a few games earlier in the season and I thought that he did well in a tough time for us. He’s a great player. Some of the saves that he pulled off on Wednesday were brilliant. He has had to be patient and wait for his chance and what a great chance to come in and play on Wednesday.

ON THE FANS THIS SEASON…
MW: They have been brilliant all season, both home and away. They have been brilliant for us over the two legs and they have turned up in their numbers. We’re sorry for not getting further. At times when things have been tough it would have been easy for them to not come but they have and their support has helped us to turn it around.

ON THE POSITIVES FROM THE SEASON AS A WHOLE…
MW: It’s easy to just look at this game and we are all devastated about that. However, you have to look at the whole season. The boys have shown character to do well and come back from a bad spell with a changed manager. We have come back strong. It’s just disappointing not to get through.

ON HOW MUCH HE’S ENJOYED PLAYING WITH EVERYONE THIS YEAR…
MW: It was such a good group of lads last year too, but the players that have come in have been brilliant. The squad has improved and it’s just disappointing that we didn’t improve on where we were last year.

ON HOW TO PICK UP AND PREPARE FOR NEXT SEASON…
MW: We have to come back in pre-season and just say to ourselves that we don’t want to be in that position again. I don’t want to leave it up to chance, up to the play-offs or anything like that. We have got to just work as hard as we can to try and improve our league position and get out of this league.
