Since the Bury victory on New Year’s Day, manager Graham Alexander has made three new signings, which Burgess believes will increase the strength of the side.

Speaking to iFollow Iron, the defender previewed the game, reflected on the couple of weeks training and spoke about his spell in the starting eleven.

ON TRAINING AHEAD OF THE PORTSMOUTH GAME…
CB:
I think everyone has been looked after and made sure that we have all done the right things on the training pitch in preparation for this game. Hopefully it all goes well on Saturday. For me personally, I have missed it. It has been a long week looking forward to this game.

ON THE MATCH…
CB:
We will go and play our own game and do our own thing, believing we can win the game. It is a tough test and will be a good place to go and play football. I’m looking forward to it.

"I’m buzzing, that is what it is all about. All of the boys will tell you that. It is all about playing football on the pitch and getting those results, which hopefully we have shown."

ON THE STRENGTH OF THE SQUAD WITH THREE NEW SIGNINGS…
CB:
That has been shown already this season with the competition there is for places. People have to step up to keep their spots in the team and we welcome all of the new boys in. A few of the lads are coming back to fitness now, which is good and there are now more additions to the squad.

ON WORKING HARD IN TRAINING…
CB:
That is one of the best ways to get yourself picked for the team, especially if you are not playing on the Saturday. If you are looking to be involved, you have to be performing on the training pitch.

ON HIS RUN IN THE STARTING XI…
CB:
I’m buzzing, that is what it is all about. All of the boys will tell you that. It is all about playing football on the pitch and getting those results, which hopefully we have shown. It has been really good and I’m really happy.

ON CHARLIE GOODE’S LATE WINNER AGAINST BURY…
CB:
There were loads of emotions. I thought I had missed and was absolutely gutted but it bounced back for Charlie Goode to score. I am really happy for him and he has deserved it because he has been playing unbelievable in the last few games. When he was in the team before, he was doing exactly the same thing.
