Crofts joins the Iron

The 33-year-old’s signing was confirmed on Friday evening, and the ex-Charlton man is looking forward to the prospect of plying his trade for United after penning a one-year deal.

In an interview with iFollow Iron, he explained how the move came about and spelled out his ambitions.

ON THE MOVE ITSELF…
AC: It was my first deadline day move to be honest. I’ve always watched on Sky Sports News thinking ‘it’ll be decent one day to maybe be involved in a transfer like that’ but to be fair it was quite stressful. We were just glad to get it over the line. There were talks during the day and I was buzzing when it was done. As soon as I knew Scunthorpe were interested it was something that really attracted me. After speaking to the manager, it was a decision made really.

ON THE JOURNEY UP TO SCUNTHORPE…
AC: I got up early on Friday morning to drive here. It was a three-hour drive, so not too bad, but I didn’t want to be late on the first day. It was an early rise to be here on time, to meet the gaffer, meet the boys and get ready for Saturday.

ON WHAT ATTRACTED HIM TO THE IRON…
AC: When I heard of the interest, I knew Scunthorpe have a strong squad, missing out through the play-offs last year. I know what a good team I’m joining -  a hard-working side who can play some good stuff. I’ve heard lots of good things about the manager as well and can’t wait to get my feet through the door. I want to have a good impact.

ON PASSING HIS EXPERIENCE ON…
AC: That’s something I thrive on really. We had a lot of young lads at Charlton and at Brighton coming through and making the step-up. I love working with them and take it on myself as a senior player to make the young boys better, relaxed and enjoy their football.

ON SIGNING ALONGSIDE FELLOW EX-CHARLTON MAN LEE NOVAK…
AC: He is a top man and a top player as well. I’m looking forward to seeing him in a Scunthorpe shirt scoring goals and causing problems for the defence. He’s very good at what he does and he’s experienced as well. He’s been there, done it and is a very good signing. When I knew Nov’s was making the move as well, it seemed obvious to me that the club want to go places.

ON HIS AMBITIONS…
AC: I’m a very ambitious person and have been lucky enough to have some good promotions in my career, and challenging for things. That’s what I see this as – challenging to get promoted and to get into the Championship. We’ll do everything to make that happen.

ON WHAT HE CAN OFFER…
AC: I’d like to think I’m an all-round midfielder with good energy, who likes to get on the ball and pass, likes to get my foot in, likes to tackle and wants to make things happen. I can be a holding midfielder or I can get into the box as well. I’d like to be thought of as a versatile midfielder who hopefully the fans will enjoy.
