MORRIS NAMED IN SKY BET LEAGUE ONE TEAM OF THE SEASON

21 March 2017

With 19 league goals to his name so far in 2016-17, Josh Morris more than merited a place in the Football Manager Sky Bet League One Team of the Season.

Ahead of next month's EFL Awards, the Football Manager™ Team of the Season has been revealed for each division.

Each of the 72 EFL clubs nominated a local media representative, who in turn selected a team of 11 players and a manager, not including the team that they cover.

The votes were then counted, and the select XIs were formed in a 4-3-3 formation.

Arriving in the summer from Bradford City, the 25-year-old hit the ground running, scoring in style on his competitive debut against Bristol Rovers. The winger struck four more times in August, including a brace as the Iron put five past Gillingham without reply at Glanford Park.

Morris’ scintillating form in the first month of the campaign would soon be rewarded, as he picked up the Sky Bet League One Player of the Month award for August.

However, there was no case of the winger resting on his laurels as the season moved on into September, and he matched his previous five goal haul to win the award for a second time.

He kicked off the month by netting in a 4-0 home triumph over Southend United, and followed it up two weeks later with an unstoppable near post effort against Sheffield United. Morris then rounded off September in stupendous fashion, as he scored not once, not twice, but three times in a magical night at the Banks's Stadium, with the Iron cruising to a 4-1 victory.

Four more goals would follow for the midfielder over the course of October and November, with Morris demonstrating his ability to score in a variety of ways, including two free-kicks, against Northampton Town and Chesterfield respectively.

While December didn’t bring any further opportunities for Morris to add to his tally, he weighed in with assists, four of them in fact, in encounters with Oxford United, Rochdale and Millwall.

The new year began in much the same vain as the latter part of 2016 though, as Scunthorpe’s top marksman curled home a magnificent free-kick against Peterborough United, ahead of finding the net next time around in the Iron’s 3-2 success over Bury.

Another piece of Morris magic was conjured up later that month too, with the Iron’s number 11 securing all three points for his side in the closing stages at Northampton. The left footed scorcher from distance won Morris yet another accolade, as he picked up the Sky Bet League One goal of the month for January.

The former Bradford man’s latest strike brought up his latest milestone in a truly remarkable season, as he reached 20 goals in all competitions thanks to another successfully converted free-kick - this time against AFC Wimbledon.
