The 1-0 success over the U’s was Scunthorpe’s first league victory of the season, and his side make a swift return to action when they visit Middlesbrough in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
The 35-year-old spoke to iFollow Iron ahead of the game.
ON THE WIN OVER OXFORD…
MG: I think it went well. We got our first win of the season, and that’s what we wanted. I think we’ve been slightly unlucky in previous games, but we’ve shown character to come from behind and get ourselves back in them (versus Notts County and Rochdale). On Saturday, we got our noses in front and held on. It shows good character throughout the squad.
ON MAKING TWO IMPORTANT SAVES IN THE VICTORY…
MG: I’m part of a team and if I can stop the ball going in the net at one end, and someone can put the ball in at the other end, then we’re going in the right direction.
ON THE FIRST CLEAN SHEET…
MG: We’ve been defending relatively well so far and were disappointed not to get a clean sheet before Saturday. This is the first one on the board and hopefully there will be more to come. We work every day in training on it, and the manager talks to us about what he wants and what he feels we can improve on. We look at the videos. It’s good to get a first clean sheet. We defended very well throughout the game, and Rory McArdle and Murray Wallace are forming a great partnership.
ON THE MIDDLESBOROUGH CUP CLASH…
MG: It’s going to be a big test, we know that - whatever team they decide to put out. They have a massive squad and a lot of players to choose from, who will all be looking to impress their manager as well to get into the team. We know what to expect and it will be a test, but we’ll give a good account of ourselves. Hopefully we can cause a bit of an upset.
