Scunthorpe United are saddened to have learnt of the death of former player Barry Horstead, aged 80.
The defender is highly regarded as one of the Iron's best-ever, and was a part of United's most successful times in Division Two.
Born in Brigg, Horstead graduated from the youth set-up at Scunthorpe after a spell of National Service with the RAF which saw him servicing Lancaster Bombers in Singapore.
Horstead would make 320 league appearances for the club between 1956 and 1966, scoring three goals, with a further 34 appearances and 1 goal in cup competitions for the club.
His retirement would keep him local, working as a boiler house foreman at the Brigg Sugar Factory; retiring when the plant closed.
Horstead passed away at home following a short illness on Friday, February 12.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Barry's family and friends at this sad time.
