Scunthorpe host Altrincham, and the hosts are coming into this game off the back of a disappointing 2-1 loss to Sutton United.

Scunthorpe currently sit 6th in the National League and are chasing promotion, whilst Altrincham sit 15th but are on a great run of form, winning four of their last five matches.

Andy’s Bet Club’s football analyst will break down Altrincham’s recent clash with Truro to see what the statistics suggest about how they might set up against Scunthorpe.

Altrincham vs Truro City

Despite losing the game 2-0, Truro created more chances in the game and also created higher-quality chances. They directed eight shots on target in the game and created an xG (expected goals) of 2.60 in the game. In comparison, Altrincham had four shots on target and created an xG of 1.34.

However, when Truro were in front of goal they were not very clinical. The post-shot xG (psxG) stats indicate the quality of a player’s finish from each shot, and Truro’s combined psxG was 0.63. As this is significantly lower than the 2.60 xG they created, it shows that their finishing was poor and they didn’t trouble the Altrincham goalkeeper enough.

When out of possession, Altrincham were passive with a PPDA (Passes per Defensive Action) of 15.4 and an average formation line of 38.8 metres. In comparison, Truro were a lot more on the front foot with a PPDA of 11.3 and an average formation line of 51.4 metres.

The area of attack stats show that a large proportion of Truro’s chances were created from central areas, with 77% of their xG (2.01 xG) created from there and only 23% being created from wide areas (0.59 xG).

Final Thoughts

Scunthorpe are on a good goalscoring run and have scored three goals in two of their last three games. However, Altrincham’s defence could be a match for Scunthorpe’s attack, having kept clean sheets in three of their last five games.

Altrincham have averaged a ball possession of 53% so far this season, so it would be no surprise if they dominate the ball in this upcoming game, as Scunthorpe have only averaged 48% possession this season.

The season’s interception statistics place Altrincham second from bottom with 32.8 interceptions per game. Therefore, if Scunthorpe move the ball quickly, they could play a lot of progressive passes through the lines in behind the Altrincham midfield.

Altrincham have lined up in a 3-4-3 in their last two games, which have both been victories, so it would be no surprise if they shape up in the same way against Scunthorpe.
