Andy Dawson has been back with the Iron as a coach since 2013.
Dawson initially joined the Iron on loan from Nottingham Forest in December 1998 before making the move permanent three months later.
He went on to spend the next four years with United and played the full 90 minutes as Scunthorpe beat Leyton Orient 1-0 in the Division Three Play-Off final at Wembley in May 1999.
In total, the full-back played 228 games in claret and blue during his first spell before departing for Hull City in May 2003 on a free transfer.
He was a first team regular for Hull during a ten year stint with the club and helped them gain promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2007-08 season.
After making 317 appearances for the Tigers, Dawson left at the end of the 2013-14 campaign and re-joined United on a free transfer as a player/coach.
He played 22 times as Scunthorpe secured promotion back to League One last season and continued the dual role in the following season before focusing on the coaching side.
He enjoyed a successful spell in caretaker charge alongside Nick Daws following the departure of Mark Robins and Ned Kelly, and then assisted Daws during his month as manager.
