The Iron are back on the road looking to get back to winning ways after being halted to a stalemate 0-0 draw at home against Radcliffe, which saw Ross Fitzsimons save a penalty in the 93rd minute to heroically save a point for United.
Our opponents were also held to a point last time out. Spennymoor Town sit mid-table in 12th place, having won five, drawn five and also lost five this season. The Moors will look to improve their poor form at home, having won two of their seven home games, drawing three times and losing twice, picking up just nine points from a possible 21.
Last season, the Iron picked up three points from a possible six against Spennymoor. In the home fixture it was an emphatic, comfortable 6-0 triumph seeing Connor Smith get a double inside seven minutes, and Tyler Denton, Jason Law, Jacob Butterfield and Danny Whitehall get their names on the scoresheet. Later in March in the away fixture for the Iron, it was more of a struggle as United narrowly suffered a controversial 1-0 defeat as Corey McKeown got the winner.
A key player for our opponents this season has been 22-year-old ex-Iron player Issac Fletcher. The central midfielder has netted eight goals and got himself two assists so far in the campaign having played thirteen games. Fletchers’ spell at the Iron was a loan from Middlesbrough, as he spent just over a month at United before he was recalled by his parent club.
Another threatening player that the Iron will have to look out for is Spennymoors’ number nine, Glen Taylor. The 34-year-old has netted four goals and got an assist in 10 appearances in the campaign, and is in his eighth season at the club having scored 137 goals for the Moors since his arrival in 2015-16, making the club legend a strong fan favourite.
A man in form for Spennymoor Town is left winger Junior Mondal. After joining in the summer, the 27-year-old had a quiet start to the season, but has got himself two goals in his last two games, as he looks to build on his form and settle in well at the Moors the attacker is another threat for the hosts.
As the Iron sit top of the league, just by goal difference, level on points with second placed Chorley and just two points ahead of King’s Lynn Town in third place, three points is likely to be needed to stay top of the table and also to rejuvenate the Iron’s form. Spennymoor will look to hurt the Iron with their key players and also home advantage, making this a difficult game for Andy Butler's side.
