Preview: South Shields (A)

20 February 2024

The Iron are back in action and away from home again, looking to gain a valuable three points after a resilient performance on the road at Scarborough.

United travel to South Shields for their latest trip away from the Attis Arena under the lights at the First Cloud Arena (7.45pm kick-off).

Despite not getting all three points against Scarborough the Iron became the first side to get a clean sheet away at Scarborough. This is a statement that personifies our defensive heroics against Boro.

In the reverse fixture, United got a satisfying result winning 3-1 against the side from Tyneside as Kian Scales, Danny Elliott and Danny Whitehall and for our opponents Aaron Martin got himself on the scoresheet.

Similarly to our run of form, the Boro have picked up just two wins in their last eight matches, and have not had a victory in their last three, losing twice and drawing once.

In the reverse fixture, the Iron made a statement with an emphatic victory winning 4-1, Fin Shrimpton, Cameron Wilson and Danny Elliott all got on the scoresheet and the fourth goal was an own goal by Euan Mulhern, before Lewis Maloney got a consolation for Boro.

IRON TEAM NEWS

Liam McAlinden was handed a start at the weekend, making his debut for the side, as he was a standout performer at the Flamingo Land Stadium.

On-loan Bradford City attacker Dylan Youmbi made his debut from the bench at the weekend and will be part of the squad once more. Flynn Clarke could be included for the first time after playing catch-up

Elsewhere, Jason Law and Callum Roberts are both absent through injury.

THE OPPOSITION

South Shields are coming off the back of two losses and the latest one coming at home to Darlington where they lost 4-0.

The Mariners' strength comes with their sharp attack with 54 goals scored, just two other teams have scored more goals than them. With an attack like South Shields, they can hurt anyone in the division and the Iron will need to be on their A game defensively once again.

South Shields' player to watch closely is Paul Blackett. The 26-year-old proven prolific striker has netted 21 times in the league, and is their top scorer. Paul spent time on the books at Newcastle United as a youngster, but got his break in professional football at Gateshead in 2019 after impressing when on trial at the club. Blackett signed for our opponents from Spennymoor Town in the summer and returned to the north-east where he has thrived.
