Joint statement from the Board of Directors at Scunthorpe United Football Club

21 September 2023

When David established the new Board of Directors, he wanted us to look at how the club could be run professionally as a financially responsible business.

The members of the board are all from Scunthorpe and are very passionate about the club. All members will be devoting significant amounts of personal time to helping the club succeed and we fully back our Chair, David.

The priority of David and his Board is to restore the club to its historic position as being one of the best financially run clubs in the lower leagues. We don’t think that anyone will be surprised that this is not going to be an easy task, we are far from where we once were. Years of poor decision making cannot be undone overnight. To use a former Chairman’s words “we need to live within our means”. This means tough decisions. Some of which will be unpopular, but we know that fans who have seen what the club once was, and the disaster that bad financial management has brought on us, will continue to support the club, and all its staff, in its time of need.

When David took over the club, it is no secret that it was in a precarious financial position. He has already detailed some of the steps he took to prevent the club being wound up. He is continuing to settle historic debts and legal cases the club faces. It is because of this, that we are in a position to look forward to a time that the club does not need large amounts being paid in just to ensure its survival. Part of that has been to establish a playing and management team that everyone can be proud of which we think has already been done.

Over the coming weeks, we will be notifying everyone about changes that will be taking place to ensure the club is on a stable and secure financial footing, not only to ensure its immediate survival but to rebuild to where everyone involved in the club, fans, players, board and especially David want to be.

There will be many challenges to overcome. We hope that everyone will continue to support the Club, David and the Board, in our journey so that we can continue to have a club and community to be proud of.
