In memoriam: Neil Matthews

9 May 2023

Scunthorpe United is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Neil Matthews, at the age of 56 following a battle with cancer.

Beginning his playing career at Grimsby Town between 1984 and 1987, making 11 appearances, Neil made one appearance on loan for the Iron in 1985. He would also have spells away from Blundell Park at Halifax Town and Bolton Wanderers.

With two goals in nine appearances with Halifax, after leaving Grimsby in 1987, he'd sign for the side and go on to score 29 appearances in 105 games across a three year spell.

Matthews would then spend two seasons at Stockport County, with a further return to Halifax on loan, before a three campaign stint at Lincoln City.

He'd complete his playing career with spells at Bury, Dagenham and Redbridge and Gainsborough Trinity, Guiseley, Leigh RMI and Chorley before a back injury enforced retirement on him in 2001.

Neil would then join the staff at Huddersfield Town's academy. In 2017, he joined Bradford City at Head of Coaching, progressing into the Academy Manager role in 2019. Over his time in the role, he oversaw 15 players agree professional terms with the Bantams, along with the transfer of several rising stars to the Premier League.

Our thoughts and condolences are with Neil's family and friends at this sad time.
