Report: Maidstone United 1-1 Iron

28 February 2023

The Iron drew 1-1 away at Maidstone United on Tuesday night, with Jacob Butterfield on target early in the second half.

The Iron made three changes going into the game, as Danny Elliott, Dion Sembie-Ferris and Will Smith came in for Gerry McDonagh, Cameron Wilson and Andrew Boyce.

The first shot of the game went to the Iron as Sembie-Ferris and Butterfield worked the ball out down the right side. The latter came away with the ball, with his effort from the edge of the box saved by home goalkeeper Barden.

The 11th minute saw a chance for the Iron as a throw was knocked down from the left into the path of Butterfield. His right-footed effort from the edge of the box went just wide of Barden’s goal, and was adjudged to have taken a touch.

There was then a quick break from the Iron as Butterfield held up the ball before sending a reverse pass across the pitch. Jake Leake chased and took one touch into the box before cutting back the cross, but the hosts got the ball clear.

The hosts then curled an in-swinging cross into the box from the right side, searching for Barham, but Ogle did well to shrug him off from challenging for the ball, allowing the Iron to win a goal kick.

With 19 minutes gone, there was an Iron chance as Butterfield’s corner was knocked down, with Sembie-Ferris cutting across the ball with a shot on goal. The ball found its way through the bodies, but the Iron were thwarted by Barden.

There was then a Maidstone free-kick soon after, Fowler won a header following the ball into the box, but the effort was off target. Chapman was able to move across his box to keep the ball in play and gather.

On 24 minutes, Maidstone had a chance as the ball fell to Wanjau-Smith, but he snatched at the effort. It still needed saving, with Aaron Chapman pushing the ball away from danger.

Elliott then won a shoulder barge on the right goal line, sending his defender to the ground. He brought the ball into the area before drilling a near post shot towards goal, which Barden saved.

Maidstone took the lead on 33 minutes when Bone drilled in a long range effort which took a big deflection to wrong foot Chapman.

Three minutes later, Butterfield intervened and took possession, playing a first time pass for Elliott. He opened out and had a go from range, with Barden pushing the ball behind for a corner.

The subsequent set-play was drilled in low from the left, with the ball not turned home. The Iron had a throw on the right with Ogle. He sent in the second cross, but the hosts managed to get the ball clear.

United levelled at the start of the second period as Reagan Ogle picked the ball up, checked inside and drove forward. He sent the ball through for Sembie-Ferris on the right, who laid it back to Butterfield, who nestled the ball in the corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

After 53 minutes, there was a free-kick to Maidstone on the left side just outside the penalty area. Deacon sent the resultant free-kick into the stand.

The first Scunthorpe change came around 10 minutes later when Sembie-Ferris was replaced by Wilson.

On 68 minutes, Butterfield floated in a free-kick, with Ben Richards-Everton sending his header wide.

Two minutes later, the hosts' Shonibare had a go from range, with his left-footed effort curling just wide of Chapman’s left-hand post.

After 73 minutes, Beestin skipped the ball over his man outside the box and went down. Belatedly it was a free-kick for the Iron. Butterfield cleared the wall with the effort, but Barden saved, resulting in a corner for the Iron. Smith won the header from Butterfield’s corner, but he sent the ball wide.

In between that passage, McDonagh came on for Elliott.

Soon after, the hosts' Shonibare sent a powerful effort across goal and wide from the left side of the area with Barham unable to get a head to the ball.

On 78 minutes, Butterfield controlled on the edge of the box, seeing his shot blocked by a defender.

There were then a succession of chances with 81 minutes played as Pugh sent a half volley goalwards, with Barden pushing the ball away. McDonagh then chased, forcing an error. Beestin skipped into the box before his low shot across goal was tipped wide for a corner.

Richards-Everton won the header from the corner, with Barden gathering the effort on target.

Not long after, Butterfield spread play wide for Wilson. He took down the ball before taking on his man and flashing a cross to the near post which McDonagh turned wide of the target.

With 84 minutes gone, Ogle again surged forward before slipping in Wilson down the right. He cut inside the area before seeng his effort blocked. Bunker also saw his long range effort stopped en route to goal.

At the other end, there was a superb save from Chapman as he got low to his left to push Barham’s header around the post for a corner.

There were four minutes of stoppage time, during which Lawson sent a looping half-volley just wide of the target, but the spoils ended up shared.
