A Christmas message from the Club Chaplain

22 December 2023

Undoubtedly, 2023 has been the most turbulent in the history of Scunthorpe United Football Club.

It has also been a very turbulent year in world and domestic history. There has been more than a sense of unease over the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza, as well as issues surrounding migrancy, climate change and homelessness. However, fortunately the troubles in our club have been much relieved in the past nearly three months, and we thank wholeheartedly those who have stood up and been counted. Of course, much remains to be done, but it can be done on firmer foundations.

At this time of year, we are all urged to do something to help the less fortunate, the lonely and the housebound. It’s too easy to get wrapped up in receiving presents, eating and drinking too much and no doubt having family arguments. The Christmas season is about hope, peace and goodwill to all; these are often in short supply. A baby was born over two thousand years ago in a land where there is at present bitter fighting; that baby came on earth to unite people, rather than divide them. It’s a message that’s too often forgotten today. Have a very Happy Christmas.

“All glory be to God on high,
and to the earth be peace;
goodwill henceforth from heaven to men
begin and never cease!”
