Preview: Gateshead (H)

25 October 2022

The Iron return to home soil this Tuesday night with Gateshead next up at Glanford Park, after trips to South Shields and Southend United.

All at Scunthorpe United were saddened to learn of the passing of former manager John Duncan at the age of 73. He died peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.

We will have a minute's applause to commemorate John's life and his service to the Iron prior to kick-off against Gateshead, while the players will wear black armbands for the game.

Former Iron midfielder Wayne Bullimore will be the special guest taking part in a Question-and-Answer session in the restaurant.

The Tynesiders were defeated 3-1 at home against Woking on Saturday, but advanced after defeating Altrincham 2-1 in their Emirates FA Cup Fourth qualifying round replay last Tuesday.

Gateshead currently sit 21st in the Vanarama National League after 14 games, picking up wins against Maidstone and Maidenhead United.

The side based in Tyne and Wear were promoted back to the National League in the 2021/22 season, finishing as the table-toppers in the Northern division following expulsion.

Gateshead were refused a National League license in 2019 due to financial ruling breaches, seeing the side drop down into the regional National League North.

The National League North in 2020-21 was declared null and void in February 2021, with no teams promoted or relegated, however the Tynesiders won 29 of their 42 games to seal the title and return to the fifth tier in the 2021/22 season.
