Report: U18s victorious at Harrogate Town

12 March 2022

Charley Strouther, Tyrell Sellars-Fleming and Ben Franklin scored as the Iron's Under-18s recorded a 3-2 victory at Harrogate Town in the last game of their regular Youth Alliance League season, before it gets split into a Merit League for four final games.

"We started the game well and created a number of chances, but our final cross or shot wasn't as good as it needed to be for us to get in the league," began Academy Manager Tony Daws.

Harrogate had a chance 30 minutes in when they played a ball up to a striker, who flicked it on and one of their players went through and shot over the crossbar, in what was an early warning for the Iron.

On 43 minutes, a good cross from the right by Ben Franklin was met at the far post by Oliver Lobley, whose header drew a good save from the home goalkeeper.

In the 52nd minute, Strouther went through one-on-one with the goalkeeper and forced a save from the goalkeeper at the near post.

Then an almost identical situation happened one minute later, as he went through on his stronger left side and buried the shot, hard and low into the far corner.

Within about five minutes, Scunthorpe conceded, and it actually came about after a short Iron corner was counter-attacked, and ended with their striker drawing a foul from Owen Foster in the area, which they scored from to make it 1-1.

At around the hour mark, Sellars-Fleming went through just inside the box, one versus one, and was unlucky to see his shot well saved.

Within a couple of minutes of that, the same player went through in an almost identical situation and scored to make it 2-1.

Soon after, the hosts levelled when the Harrogate right-winger cut inside on the edge of the 18-yard box and fired the ball in at the far post.

On 89 minutes, Sellars-Fleming went through again on a great run and was brought down just outside the box as he was going to shoot.

The hosts set the wall up, and Franklin saw a gap that he curled down the outside of the wall and into the bottom corner.

There were three minutes of added time but United managed to see the game through and win 3-2.

Daws added: "Harrogate have done well as they're in their first season in this league and they're a team of first year scholars who have done really well. It was a challenging game for us.

"Harrison Poulter was out with an ankle injury, while we also had no Harry Lewis, Harvey Cribb or Jack Moore-Billam due to their involvement with the first team, but the good thing is it gave the other boys an opportunity and we did well today.

"We were frustrated at times when we couldn't hold on to the lead but the lads were brilliant to show the resolve and get the winning goal. We stuck to our principles and in the end we came through."
