McMahon: It's always nice when it clicks in games like that

16 July 2022

Coach Tony McMahon provided his reaction to Iron Player after his side's 3-2 home pre-season friendly win over Championship side Sheffield United.

The Iron went three goals up in the first half, with Colin Daniel scoring twice and Alfie Beestin also netting, as they took on a side three divisions above, with Premier League aspirations.

McMahon said: "There was some really pleasing stuff, especially in the first half when we looked really good and put into practice what the manager has been preaching right from the start of pre-season in terms of how he wants to play and I think the fans saw glimpses of what he wants from his team.

"He's always been a possession-based manager, and we passed the ball really well, switching the play like we've been working on all the time in training. It's always pleasing when you see things you've been working on go into games.

"We were really good and scored three great goals. In the second-half, with all the changes, it became a bit scrappy but overall it was a good 90 minutes."

Talking about the brace scorer, he continued: "Colin (Daniel) has done really well since he's been in the building and is a good character, and that's what we're trying to create - a good environment where players want to come in and learn.

"It's still pre-season and you get out of it what you want to get out of it. We have a lot of games, like the manager wanted, and that's the fourth already. We still have four more to play, which is brilliant for the players. We work hard on the training ground and it's always nice when it clicks in games like that."
