McMahon speaks after Farsley victory

30 July 2022

Assistant manager Tony McMahon provided his reaction to Iron Player after United's 5-1 victory at Farsley Celtic in their final friendly of pre-season.

Taking on a team a division below, debutant Reagan Ogle gave Scunthorpe an early lead before they were pegged back. However, substitutes Cameron Wilson, Nat Wallace and Charlie Burden-Whittleton (two) tipped the game back into Scunthorpe's advantage.

McMahon said: "It was another really good test for us, and more of a realistic one in terms of what we'll come up against this season. They were a physical team, quite direct in how they play, but the boys stood up to the test and we played some good stuff - we're looking to implement how we want to play.

"They were a bit tired when we brought the younger players on at the end, but they were brilliant when they came on and really put their chances away. It was really good.

"We spoke before the game about there being a lot of ex-league players in there who know what they're doing, and they've got a style of play that's physical and organised. It was a proper test for us but we dealt with it really well."

Talking about pre-season as a whole, he added: "We've been lucky, touch wood, that we haven't had any major injuries. We've had a couple of muscle strains but nothing long-term. It's been a good pre-season, and we're happy with how it's gone. The lads have bought into everything from day one and worked their socks off for the six weeks we've been in, taking on board the way the manager wants to play and his style.

"Pre-season is done now, and now the real stuff starts. We're all looking forward to Yeovil at home next Saturday. We can't wait and we're looking forward to getting ready for that game this coming week."
