Report: Woking 2-0 Iron

16 August 2022

Scunthorpe were beaten 2-0 away at Woking on Tuesday night.

United made two changes from the side that faced Maidenhead United on Saturday as Marcus Carver and Cameron Wilson came in for Alfie Beestin and Colin Daniel.

At the start, there was superb defending from the hosts as Marcus Dewhurst played quickly upfield to Joe Nuttall from an offside. The forward knocked the ball down and somehow Carver’s shot was turned behind for a corner.

Reagan Ogle won first contact from the corner, but the ball ended up in the grasp of goalkeeper Craig Ross. Meanwhile, the hosts had a speculative effort from range, but Dewhurst saved comfortably.

With four minutes gone though, Kyran Lofthouse converted from close range following a low right-winged cross.

Two minutes later, Dewhurst saved with his feet from Padraig Amond’s shot following a cutback from the left channel.

On 11 minutes, Woking's Luke Wilkinson took a free-kick, sending his effort wide of the wall and wide of Dewhurst’s right-hand post.

With 14 minutes played, Amond tested Dewhurst following a corner, with his header going towards the right post, but the Iron shot stopper pushed the ball around the post for another corner, which was dealt with.

Then, three minutes later, Jim Kellermann drove forward before cutting onto his left foot from 25-yards. His effort cleared the crossbar, with Dewhurst having the effort covered.

As 29 minutes passed, George Taft and Andrew Boyce both threw their bodies at an incoming shot from Rohan Ince, with one of Boyce managing to block the goal bound effort. The Iron broke with Jacob Butterfield but his shot was also blocked after some neat footwork go him into position.

Jai Rowe came on for Whitehouse in the 39th minute as Scunthorpe made their first alteration.

Then, Amond sent an effort over the bar as he received the ball inside the box.

Soon after, the hosts sent a dangerous corner in front the left that Rowe managed to get a head to at the far post and clear as Woking threatened to get a second.

Then, just before the break, Kellermann sent a half-volleyed effort wide of the goal as the ball dropped for him.

On 50 minutes, Ogle sent in a long throw with Nuttall touching on. Wilson then controlled before seeing his goal bound effort blocked.

Not long after, at the other end, Dewhurst denied Reece Grego-Cox by punching his incoming effort away from danger.

However, in the 56th minute, Lofthouse drilled home his and Woking’s second of the game from the right side of the area.

Thwarted by a block by the Iron defence three minutes later, Amond curled a shot onto the post as the ball ricocheted away from danger.

Then, Scunthorpe made two changes as Colin Daniel came on for Wilson and Kgosi Ntlhe replaced O'Malley.

Nuttall and Daniel worked an opening in the 70th minute, with the latter beating his man before curling an effort over the crossbar.

The game began to fade out, although Dewhurst got behind a low drive from Kellerman to save his effort from the edge of the box with six minutes remaining.

Carver then attacked down the left and sent the ball into the danger area but home goalkeeper Craig Ross gathered.

On 87 minutes, Dewhurst was called into action again as he saved Kellermann's curled effort from the left side of the area.

During the second minute out of five in stoppage time, Boyce drew a save from Ross with a half-volleyed effort from the left side of the area. Nuttall then picked up the loose ball and sent a 30 yard effort over the crossbar.

United return to action on Saturday when they host Solihull Moors (3pm kick-off).
