First team manager Neil Cox provided his reaction to iFollow Iron after the narrow 1-0 pre-season friendly home defeat to Championship side Hull City.
Andy Cannon’s late thunderous strike was the difference between the Iron and Tigers on Saturday afternoon, but it was another positive performance in pre-season from United, following on from the 2-1 victory over League One side Burton Albion on Tuesday night.
Cox said: "It was an excellent work-out for us. In the first-half we passed the ball really well and got in some good areas against a good Hull side, but our final pass let us down really. We've been working on a different way to play, and the boys are taking it on. I was really happy with the performance, though disappointed with the result in a local derby. The way we played though, I think the fans who came here will see what we're trying to do.
"We want to be braver on the ball. Last year we just kicked it up to Lofty (Ryan Loft). At times, we will have to play League Two football and win the battles, but we're trying to play through the thirds and will keep doing so. On occasions we did that really well against a Championship side.
"We're trying to change a lot at this football club and want to play more football, entertain, and I'm encouraged by the positives I've seen. We got 65 minutes into the legs again and had no injuries."
Cox also reserved praise for academy graduate Cameron Wilson, who started the game after impressing since the squad started pre-season training just over three weeks ago.
He explained: "Cam has come through our youth system and is tenacious in how he plays, bringing people onto him and drawing fouls, and I think the fans will like what they see. He will be part of my squad. The way things are going, he'll be knocking on the door. If the younger players are good enough, they'll play."
"Hopefully we'll have some people back and we'll have to look at how their fitness levels are. The two lads we've had from the youth team have been excellent in their appearances (Josh Robertson and Jack Moore-Billam) and I'm happy for Tony Daws (academy manager) to keep pushing them on to me. I'm sure the fans will be encouraged by the young players' performances too."
