James Adcock to referee Barrow away clash

14 January 2021

James Adcock will be the man in the middle for the Iron's away league clash against Barrow on Saturday.

The Nottinghamshire-based official will travel to Holker Street for his 12th game of the season and fifth in Sky Bet League Two.

Formerly a Select Group Two referee until the end of last season, the official has had an injury plagued few years which kept him out of action from April 2017 until March 2019, missing the entirety of 2017-18 and taking charge of just one league encounter in 2018-19. He managed 15 games last season with a six-week lay-off in October and his last game coming at the start of February.

He qualified as a referee in 2000, aged 16, following in his father’s footsteps, who also officiated on the EFL. Adcock was appointed to the EFL as an assistant referee in 2008 and to the National List of Referees in 2011-12. He had also previously worked as a PE teacher at a secondary school for nine years.

His first game of the campaign was a goalless draw between Stoke City and Blackpool in the Carabao Cup which ended up with the Potters winning 5-4 on penalties. Adcock issued one caution. Meanwhile, his last game was back on December 1st when he oversaw the 1-0 home win for Northampton Town over Fleetwood Town. Seven yellow cards were issued on the night.

Prior to his initial injury, Adcock was a regular match official in the Championship and completed the 2016-17 season having taken charge of 28 games, showing 88 yellow cards and two reds.

He's refereed the Iron on five occasions in total, most recently in August 2019 when he oversaw the narrow defeat at Macclesfield Town. Before that, he was in charge in October 2014 at Vale Park, showing five yellow cards and one red on that night, with the dismissal going to Jennison Myrie-Williams on his return to his former club. In total, across the five games, he's shown 22 yellow cards and three reds. He was due to take charge of the Papa John's Trophy clash against Manchester City's Under-21s last year, but he came off the game due to injury.

Meanwhile, he's taken charge of Barrow on one previous occasion, nearly a decade ago. That came as a non-league side at home to Rotherham United in the FA Cup. The Millers narrowly avoided the potential banana skin to progress, with Adcock showing three cautions.

So far in this campaign, he has officiated in 11 encounters, showing 26 yellows and two reds.

On Saturday, Adcock will be assisted by Geoffrey Liddle and Alan Clayton, while Ross Joyce has been appointed as the fourth official.
