First team manager Neil Cox gave his thoughts to iFollow Iron after his side won 3-0 at home to Grimsby Town on #DerbyDay.
It was goals from Abo Eisa (two) and Ryan Loft that helped United take the three points, along with a clean sheet, after a hard-fought victory over the Mariners.
Speaking post-match, Cox said: “All week we have been calm, ready to go and organised. The boys have trained really well and took it onto the pitch. For the first 35 minutes I thought we were excellent, scored a goal and it was a brilliant free-kick from Eisa. We set the tone, and our game plan worked.
“I was a little disappointed that we didn’t score more goals today as there was still an opportunity to get two or three more goals."
Cox mentioned the win has lifted the sprits of players, saying: “We have been under pressure waiting to get this game out of the way. We needed to win today, not just for where we are in the league, but for the people that support us.
“We need to keep going and working hard. I thought today was a great three points to us, but it’s also three points for the supporters. A local derby and some bragging rights, but we deserved it.”
Talking about the overall performance, Cox stated that it is something to build on for the rest of the season. He said: “We’ve got one or two knocks and injuries, but we will get them in on Monday morning and have a look at them. Three points today and a clean sheet is really good going forward.”
Touching upon which players had knocks needing further analysis, he said: “Eisa took a really bad 50-50 late on and opened his knee out a bit which will need looking at. Jordan (Clarke) has a sore thigh, but we have got games thick and fast.”
United now face Port Vale at home on Tuesday, and Colchester away on Friday. He said: “Everybody is going to need to be fit. We are going to go strong, and keep working hard like we did today."
