Marc Edwards will take charge of the Iron's home league encounter against Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

In what is Edwards' second EFL campaign as a referee, the Tyne and Wear-based official will take charge of the two sides for the third time competitively following his promotion to the National List of Referees ahead of the 2019-20 season.

He has experience in the EFL prior to this season though, first starting as an assistant referee before opting to drop back down to the National League with the whistle, where he remained for two years before being promoted back.

He took charge of United's slender defeat against Walsall back in September 2019, showing three yellow cards, while he refereed the 3-1 defeat at Crewe three months later, issuing four cautions.

The Latics haven't won with him in charge yet either, but did manage a draw on their last match involving the official, with two cautions issued in the 1-1 stalemate against Forest Green Rovers. A further yellow card was shown in the defeat at Carlisle in September 2019.

Edwards has currently taken charge of 19 matches so far this season, his most recent on Tuesday when he took charge of the League One match between Shrewsbury Town and Crewe Alexandra when he issued five yellow cards.

Last season, in his debut EFL campaign, he refereed 25 games, showing 62 yellow cards and one red, ending the memorable year with a League Two play-off semi-final match. So far this season, in the 19 matches he has refereed, he has shown 67 yellow cards and no reds.

On Saturday, Marc will be assisted by Gareth Mellor and Geoffrey Russell, while Matthew Smith will assume the role of fourth official.
