Flashback: Swindon Town

4 August 2021

As the Iron get ready to host Swindon Town in our first league game of the season this Saturday, we look back at some memorable past encounters against the Robins.

Manager Graham Alexander celebrated his first home game in style by guiding Scunthorpe to a thumping victory over Swindon - their biggest win since 2003.

Conor Townsend's strike and a deflected shot by fellow full-back Jordan Clarke put the Iron in control at the break.

A low strike by Hakeeb Adelakun and Tom Hopper's left-foot effort made it 4-0.

And Paddy Madden's 21st goal of the season was followed by a Hopper header to seal a win which takes the hosts to within six points of the play-offs.

League One leaders Scunthorpe were in rampant mood as they put four past strugglers Swindon Town.

Iron striker Paddy Madden opened the scoring with a close-range finish after meeting a cross from left-back Conor Townsend

Duane Holmes made it 2-0 soon after, sweeping his shot under the body of goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux after a flowing move down the right had opened up the Swindon defence.

Any hopes the visitors might have had of getting themselves back into the game disappeared as Scunthorpe struck twice more just before the interval.

In the 43rd minute striker Kevin Van Veen capitalised on a poor back pass by lifting the ball over the advancing Vigouroux before crashing a confident left-foot shot into the net for his eighth goal of the season.

And on the stroke of half-time Madden struck again with his second of the game, netting the rebound after a great run into the box by Van Veen produced an angled shot that crashed back off the woodwork.

Swindon reduced the arrears in the 52nd minute when skipper Nathan Thompson headed home from a left-wing corner from Sean Murray - their first threat of the match.

A Simon Cox hat-trick restricted League One leaders Scunthorpe to a share of the points 13 years ago.

Cox's angled drive opened the scoring before Grant McCann's free-kick put the home side level.

Goalkeeper Phil Smith kept Swindon in the game with a string of saves before Martyn Woolford fired Scunthorpe ahead.

Cox broke the offside trap for 2-2 but Krystian Pearce's header made it 3-2, only for a Cox penalty to seal a point.
