Andy Haines to referee Manchester City Under-21s trophy clash

24 August 2021

Andy Haines will take charge of the Iron's home Papa John's Trophy encounter against Manchester City Under-21s on Tuesday.

The Tyne and Wear-based official will travel to the Sands Venue Stadium for his fifth game of the campaign.

His first game of the campaign was the 2-2 draw between Shrewsbury Town and Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup, which the Shrews advanced on penalties. No cautions were shown on the day. At the weekend, he oversaw the League One encounter between Fleetwood Town and Cheltenham Town at Highbury, which the home side won 3-2. Five cautions were issued.

He's taken charge of the Iron on 22 occasions in total, most recently on Good Friday when he refereed the goalless draw against Crawley Town. Three yellow cards were shown on the day, including one to Devarn Green. Incidentally, the match before was the corresponding fixture in this competition last season, as United were defeated by City's Under-21s - a game in which he showed no cautions.

Prior to that, it was a match which United won 2-1 at Grimsby Town, again in the EFL Trophy, thanks to a brace from Kevin van Veen. James Perch was shown a late red card by Haines, but that decision was later overturned by an Independent Regulatory Commission.

Of those encounters involving United, 18 of them have come at the Sands Venue Stadium, so Tuesday will be his 19th visit as the man in the middle. In total, across the 22 games, he's shown 65 yellow cards and one red.

Meanwhile, he's taken charge of Manchester City Under-21s games just once, with that being the corresponding fixture last season, as mentioned above.

Last season, he took charge of 30 games, issuing 70 yellow cards and four reds. So far in this campaign, he has officiated in four encounters, showing eight yellows and no reds.

On Tuesday, Haines will be assisted by Stephen Wade and Graeme Fyvie, while Declan Ford has been appointed as the fourth official.
