First team manager Neil Cox gave his reaction to iFollow Iron after United drew 1-1 away to Lincoln City in the EFL Trophy group stage on Tuesday.
Just before half-time, Tyler Cordner put the Iron in front, but Harry Anderson scored an equalising goal for the Imps with just ten minutes left of the game. The Imps managed to salvage an extra point by winning 4-2 on penalties.
Cox said: “I thought in the first-half we went into it with a game plan and looked to use the counter attack. I thought we used it really well and had four or five really good opportunities to get forward.
Cox commented on how well the first 45 minutes went, adding: “The first half I was really happy with and in the second half after coming out I had to change one or two. Obviously, Andy Dales comes off, but we just seemed to sit back a little bit and they changed the way they played.
“We knew it would be difficult at Lincoln. They were a team that wanted to keep possession and we had to work harder with the ball.
“We showed a lot of character, we had a young team out there. I just expected more in possession. We’ve worked hard on the defending and now we have to work a little bit harder in possession, create chances and counter-attack like we did in the first half.”
He continued: “There’s definitely food for thought for everybody and I’ve just spoken to the team to say we’ve come away to Lincoln. I know we’ve been beaten on penalties but we drew the game 1-1 and there have been a lot of good performances.”
Discussing the injuries, Cox said: “Dales has got a bit of a dead leg so we have to be careful; Devarn Green’s suffered a bad tackle on his foot and we’re just having a look at it now. Hopefully he’ll be alright and it’s just a bad tackle on the night. We’ll have to wait and see nearer the weekend for him.
“Harrison McGahey was due for 45 minutes but because of the injury at half-time (to Dales) I had to change it. It's minutes into his legs. He’ll miss Wednesday and Thursday now and then we'll see if he's ready for Saturday.”
Cox said: “Now we just have to get everyone ready and freshened up for the next game, and the league season starts on Saturday for us. We’re getting stronger and hopefully by Saturday I’ll have a starting eleven that are fit, strong and raring to go.”
