Wishing Graham Colby a happy retirement

29 May 2020

After more than 28 years of loyal service to Scunthorpe United Football Club, our Deputy Head Groundsperson, Graham Colby retires today. On behalf of the Board of the club, I would like to thank Graham for all his hard work and efforts over the years and congratulate him on his retirement.

In Graham’s time with the Iron, there have undoubtedly been significant changes that he has had to adapt to. Leading the team as Head Groundsperson for a significant part of his time at the club, Graham will be a familiar face to most fans and will be greatly missed by all when games return to the stadium.

Some of his notable achievements include the award for the runner-up for best pitch in 1994/95, and also Division Three Groundsman of the Year in 1995. Additionally, he was recognised for his work with apprentices in 2005.

I’m sure the past and present players, coaches and staff at the club have many stories and fond memories to tell that involve Graham and from the few I have been told, the character of Graham and the way he has always been such an important part of the club undoubtedly shine through in these.

It’s unfortunate that Graham won’t be able to put some of his retirement plans into place straight away due to the current COVID-19 situation, and all of us at the club wish we could celebrate with him in person. However, we will do as soon as it is safe and possible to do so. Graham, enjoy your well-earned retirement!
