Statement: Sands Venue Stadium closed up to and including Friday, March 20th

Scunthorpe United Football Club can confirm it has decided to shut down The Sands Venue Stadium up to and including Friday, March 20th due to the current Coronavirus outbreak.

Chief Executive Officer James Rodwell said: “The Board of Scunthorpe United met on Thursday for a scheduled board meeting, at which time it was discussed at length the possibilities of closing the building down should a decision be taken by the EFL to suspend the playing of games.

“After a full and frank discussion, it was determined the best thing to do at that point would be to shut the building down for a week and review after that one week.

“The Board’s primary concern is for the health and wellbeing of all employees and fans, and to that end we felt that this aim was best served by closing the building down for an initial period of one week. During that period the stadium will go through a process of deep cleansing.

“It’s important to make clear that we have not had anybody at the football club test positive for Coronavirus at this moment in time.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this might cause and our capable staff will endeavour to run the business remotely as best we can during the period of shutdown.

“Thank you to all our fans for bearing with us at this difficult time.”

The EFL announced on Friday, March 13th that games have been postponed at all levels until Friday, April 3rd. If you have bought a ticket for a match during that period, refund details will become available once the fixtures are rearranged.

The club apologises for any inconvenience. Staff will be working remotely from home during business hours so emails will be answered in the normal fashion.
