Fans were given the chance to vote for the player who they thought deserved the trophy at efl.com/playeroftheround and those who voted for van Veen have been put into a draw, with the winner taking home some fantastic signed merchandise.
Scunthorpe faced talented opposition in Manchester City Under-21s in round three, but thanks to van Veen’s incredible first half performance, which saw him score two screamers and set up another, Paul Hurst’s side won 3-1 to progress to the quarter finals of the Leasing.com Trophy.
On winning the Leasing.com Trophy player of the round, van Veen commented: “It’s a good feeling. It is great to be recognised for my performance and I’m happy to have the trophy.”
Scunthorpe travel to holders Portsmouth in the quarter finals, as the club look to take one step closer to Wembley.
Van Veen added: “We all would like to get to Wembley and the gaffer wants us to do really well in the cups. We went with a really strong selection against Manchester City and we want to go as far as we can. It’s going to be a really tough game in the next round against a good side, and they have shown last year that they have a go in this tournament, and we need to be on form to give ourselves a chance.”
The Leasing.com Trophy player of the round competition gives fans the opportunity to vote for the player they feel starred in each round of the competition.
An independent football expert selects five worthy players that make up the shortlist for each round, before supporters are given a chance to vote for their winner.
The player with the most votes will win the award. Every fan who votes for their favourite will be entered into a competition prize draw, where new car marketplace, Leasing.com will be offering one lucky supporter the chance to win signed merchandise.
There are now eight clubs remaining in the Leasing.com Trophy, and following the completion of the quarter finals, fans will be invited to vote for their player of the round, from a shortlist of five stand-out players.
