Report: Bradford City U18s 2-1 Iron U18s

22 February 2020

The Iron’s Under-18s were beaten 2-1 against Bradford City on Saturday lunchtime in a game played at Baysgarth Sports Village in blustery conditions.

“It was a good game and I’m pleased we could get it on because of the weather. It was a fantastic facility at Baysgarth School,” said Academy Manager Tony Daws.

“It was a tough game because Bradford City are a good side and we only beat them 2-1 a few weeks earlier.

“We took the lead in the first-half, played some good football but just didn’t get the result. With a bit more quality in front of goal, we could have had more goals.

“The game was closed to being called off because of the conditions but it gets the game played and both sets of teams played a good game considering the conditions.”

There was a free-kick to the Iron in a dangerous position on the edge of the area four minutes in but the wall did its job well.

On 17 minutes, the Bradford No 9 took aim but the wind caught the ball and it sailed wide.

Soon after, a home player strode forward and had a shot from outside the box but it didn’t trouble Jake Balme.

At the other end of the pitch, Luca Chadli looked for a way through but couldn’t get the ball from out of his feet.

Raynner Silva fired the Iron in front on 24 minutes, picking up the ball and slotting into the bottom right-hand corner.

Somehow the Iron kept the ball out with 36 minutes gone as Barks made a good block and the rebound was blocked too.

Just before half-time, a Bradford player fired into the side netting but the flag was already up.

On 55 minutes, there was a chance for Bradford, but a white shirt drove into the box and fired across goal but it flashed wide of the upright.

With 64 minutes played, a Bradford player finished from close range, levelling for the hosts.

Soon after, a Bradford forward swivelled inside the box and shot but it rolled wide.

With 10 minutes left, Silva broke the offside trap and won the Iron a corner but it was headed away.

On 83 minutes, there was a goal for Bradford as the hosts turned it around with seven minutes remaining.

In the 88th minute, there was a great chance for Silva to equalise. The initial effort was blocked and the No 8 missed the target from close range.
