Cox speaks after Boxing Day defeat

26 December 2020

First team manager Neil Cox provided his reaction to iFollow Iron after the 3-2 home Boxing Day loss to Mansfield Town.

United were on target through a Farrend Rawson own goal and John McAtee's second of the season.

Cox said: "I'm disappointed because I felt after the first 10 minutes they started the game well. Then we started to get the ball down, play and get some good angles without really hurting them. We have to be better on the ball.

"We then conceded a sloppy first goal as the ball came into our box too easily, with us letting them cross it in. Manny (Onariase) misses it and we just didn't defend it properly. We then conceded an own goal, which is difficult at any time.

"We got ourselves back in the game, as Gilly (Alex Gilliead) did well driving forward and we got some luck with an own goal.

"We came in at half-time and tried to calm the boys down, and relax them a little bit because they looked a little bit nervous. We came out in the second half and they stopped us from playing - we didn't really make many angles or chances, and then conceded another sloppy goal from a set-play again. We have conceded too many sloppy goals lately.

"We then changed it by bringing some forward-thinking players on and got ourselves another goal for 3-2. We chased the game after that, but made bad decisions from set-plays and our delivery wasn't very good."

Speaking about the injury which forced Onariase to go off early in the second-half, Cox added: "Manny has been struggling for a couple of weeks with a groin problem and we've managed to get him through, but he's injured his ankle now, so we're down to the bare bones at the back really.

"Jordan (Clarke) has managed another 90 minutes, which was excellent, and he did really well for the team."
