After two wins in a week, midfielder Alex Gilliead thought the Iron were the better side in their latest encounter, which ended in defeat to Colchester United.

Speaking to iFollow Iron after the match, he expressed his frustration not getting something from the game: “In the changing rooms we felt like we did well. Possession-wise, we had a lot of the ball and a lot of good chances and created a lot. It’s just one of them nights where we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

“Every team has a few of them throughout the season where you dominate possession and the stats, but there is only one real stat that matters and that’s the score line. We’ve had our fair share of them this season, like Carlisle. They came here this season and dominated, but we won the game.

"It’s just frustrating not taking anything out of that game tonight.”

Speaking about the match overall, he feels there are still a lot of positives to take from the match: “Good performances, good patterns of play, getting in behind, crosses, and we had one off the bar onto the line. We’ve had some good chances, but it counts for nothing when you come away with nothing.”

United nearly had a chance at goal in the second half when the ball when goalwards but wasn’t clear if the ball had gone over the line or not.

“I couldn’t really say if I’m honest," he stated.

"I didn’t think it went over. Immediately after we had one where they have scrambled it out of play. We had good chances in the first half, and they had one cross in, and they have scored. It’s just frustrating all round.”

Prior to Tuesday night, the Iron had scored seven goals over two games with a lot of chances being created, an upturn in attacking prowess in comparison to the earlier weeks of the season. Gilliead continued: “From the beginning of the season we’ve created a lot more, we’re looking a lot more dangerous going forward, and that’s a good sign.

"We can take the positives out of that. But games like tonight, we should be taking at least a point out of it. For me personally, I think we should be winning them games.”

United’s next match is on Saturday where they face Southend United and a chance to create four away wins in a row. He said: “Going into every game, in the position we’re in, we need to be winning the games and climbing the league. We have got a good squad and we have shown that over the last couple of games that we do have a good squad for this league.

“Going into Saturday we will have to have our minds on it and replicate that performance tonight which is make sure we can bury our chances.”

He added: “Southend are not just going to roll over and let us take the three points. We are going to have to play well and dominate the game. We are going to have to put on a good performance like we did tonight, but we need to get back to burying them chances like we did against Leyton Orient and Harrogate.”
