Iron manager Neil Cox reflected on his side’s latest pre-season encounter, a 2-1 win over Hull City’s Under-23s.
Kelsey Mooney and Ryan Colclough got United’s goals in the win, with a number of players building on their 45 minutes at the weekend to play for an hour just 72 hours on.
Speaking to iFollow Iron after the game, he said: “It was a good workout for us. Obviously, the team was changed a little bit for different players to get some minutes and there were positive signs yet again from what we’ve been working on.
“Especially for the first hour, I thought we saw a lot of good passing drills, good shape that we’ve worked on and getting players into the box ready to score goals. I think we had a number of chances. The forwards were in there and if they’re in there, we will score goals.”
With two matches in quick successions and tough training sessions in between, Cox is confident his players’ fitness levels will only increase.
“We’ve worked them really hard this week and that’s what we intend to do,” he continued.
“They’re going to be off tomorrow (Wednesday) and then on Thursday we will be working them hard again.
“Some players played 60 minutes today, some played 45 and that’ll be the same in our next game. After that, we’ll be looking to push up to 75 and 90 minutes.
“Hull were very good and they caused us a lot of problems. We had to work really hard to stop them from creating chances, which we did. I was disappointed that we conceded a goal but our work rate was really good today.”
Two players that have missed both pre-season fixtures so far are Jordan Clarke and Harrison McGahey. The gaffer gave an update on them.
“Both of them have got calf problems at the moment, so they’re both doing work with the physios,” he said.
“I know them both really well and I’ve seen a lot of them. Hopefully we will get some better news in the next couple of days, but I’m not sure they’re going to be fit for the next couple of games. We just have to be careful with them.”
