Kevin van Veen opened the scoring during a first-half that Scunthorpe had the better of, but Cameron Burgess levelled with a header during the minute of first-half stoppage time.
Hurst told iFollow Iron after the match: “We played really well in the first-half. It’s very rare you get two halves the same, and the second was a different story.
“Salford came much more into the game, seemed to find much more energy about them and we seemed to dip on that side, as well as not pass the ball as we had done in the first half – perhaps until the last ten minutes or so.
“Looking at it objectively, it’s mixed feelings and a point is probably fair over the course of the game, because Salford did have a scramble as well and on their side will look at it and think that could have been the winner.
“But for me, I felt the game was really there for us today and it was disappointing to go in level at the break because the first-half performance warranted being in front, as we were until late in the half. Some silly decisions from ourselves gave them that lift going in at half-time. They made a substitution at the break and that seemed to help them get their game going.
“We didn’t pass it anywhere near as well and didn’t do enough of the basics, in terms of winning the tackles and headers, and seemed to lose a bit of energy. Salford seemed to gain some. We should be good enough to handle that and work our way back into the game, but that wasn’t until too late in my opinion.”
Levi Sutton missed the match through illness, as Hurst explained: “He was ill on Thursday and Friday. I’d envisage him being back available for next weekend.”
Hurst concluded with a thank you to the away following of 1,231 that made the journey across.
He said: “Especially with the weather on the way over, it was great to give them the goal to cheer about and I’m just disappointed we didn’t get that winner in front of them because it would have sparked some really good scenes. It was a great effort from them and we thank them for their support.”
