SCENE-SETTER

Following last weekend’s stalemate against Stevenage in the league, the Iron will be hoping to see their name in the hat for the second round draw, the stage they bowed out at last season, courtesy of Shrewsbury Town.

Current Iron wide-man Alex Gilliead started for the Shrews that day, which is also Iron gaffer Paul Hurst’s former club. The Shropshire-based League One outfit were victorious on the day, beating United 1-0, after Josh Morris missed a late penalty.

Crawley head into Saturday’s first round match with the Iron on the back of a late 2-1 defeat against Cambridge United.

TEAM NEWS

Manager Paul Hurst has confirmed the game will come too soon for Jamie Ward (hamstring), Jordan Hallam (hamstring) and Kgosi Ntlhe (groin) as they all recover from their respective lay-offs.

Ward missed last Saturday's goalless draw with Stevenage and has since had an injection to aid his recovery, as has Matthew Lund (knee) who also missed the encounter. The midfielder is touch-and-go for the weekend, with a late decision set to be made on whether he travels.

Regan Slater was the new addition to the injury list last weekend, after he slipped in training and injured his foot. The Sheffield United loanee remains absent.

Expected to travel though are Jordan Clarke (appendix) and Andy Dales (calf), who have both stepped up their training schedule and would have gained match minutes on Tuesday had the Central League Cup tie with Mansfield not fallen victim to the weather.

Elsewhere, George Miller (quad strain) is still with Barnsley recovering from his injury, but it is hoped he will return to the group next week.

PAST MEETINGS

The two sides have met just five times in their history, with the Iron remaining unbeaten in their past four clashes.

United have already welcomed Crawley to the Sands Venue Stadium this season, drawing 2-2 in the third league game of the campaign. Rory McArdle and Matthew Lund were the Iron goalscorer’s on the day.

Prior to August, the sides last meeting came in April 2015, where the Iron came out on top, winning 2-1. Paddy Madden was on the scoresheet that day, and current striker Kevin van Veen started the match.
