OTD: November 9

9 November 2019

Remembering past matches played by the Iron on November 9...

Former Iron players born on this day: Clint Marcelle (1968), Callum Kennedy (1989), Ashley Palmer (1992).

In form Scunthorpe secured their sixth win in seven games with an impressive 2-0 victory over York at Bootham Crescent in 2001.

Former York loan star Martin Carruthers set the ball rolling after 49 minutes when he tapped the ball into the net after Lee Hodges' fine strike had hit the post.

Iron goalkeeper Tom Evans kept City at bay in the first half, denying Lee Bullock and Mark Maley. Lee Nogan wasted a great chance to open the scoring from close range.

Evergreen Peter Beagrie had United's best chance of the half but his vicious 25-yard effort cannoned off the post with goalkeeper Alan Fettis well beaten.

The Minstermen started the second half brightly with Kieran Darlow forcing Evans into a superb save following good work from Michael Proctor after 48 minutes.

The visitors exploited their space after Carruthers' ninth goal of the season and could have extended their lead.

But Fettis made a fine double save to deny Steve Torpey after 75 minutes.

Spaniard Alex Calvo-Garcia wrapped up the points with a classy finish after 83 minutes following a neat pass from tireless Hodges.

The action did not diminish, however, as York defender Maley, booked on the hour-mark for an off-the-ball incident, was sent off for a crunching challenge on Beagrie in stoppage time.

Overall playing record for November 9: Played 14, Won 6, Drawn 4, Lost 4, Scored 12, Conceded 11.
