Gilliead: Probably the best goal I’ve scored

19 November 2019

Winger Alex Gilliead was delighted to net his third goal of the season in style during Saturday’s 2-0 away victory at Leyton Orient.

The former Shrewsbury wideman’s spectacular fourth-minute strike helped set the tone for Scunthorpe, who recorded their first away league win of the season against the O’s.

Gilliead told iFollow Iron: “I think it’s probably the best one I’ve scored. The goalkeeper was on the edge of the six-yard box and I just thought I had to get a clean strike on it, which thankfully I did and luckily it went in.

“It was four or five minutes in when we got the first goal and it was always going to be a big goal, the first one, especially coming to a place like this. It put us on top and settled us down in the game. We then had more chances to make it 2-0 in the first half, but we carried on and eventually got the goal in the second period (through Lee Novak).

“It’s a big win, coming away from home is always difficult, but that’s our first away league win and we’re all happy. It’s a big confidence booster to everyone.

“We know where we should be in the league, and we should be higher than where we are at the minute. We’ll just keep going game-by-game and I’m sure we’ll move up the table. It’s a tight league and we can soon climb. We just have to focus on ourselves and the games coming up, and hopefully we can get decent results.”

Port Vale come to the Sands Venue Stadium on Saturday to provide our next opposition, and Gilliead is seeking a win that would extend the unbeaten home run to nine games.

He added: “It will be another tough game back at home. We haven’t lost at home for a while now and have had some good wins there. It will be a battle but we just have to focus on ourselves and do what we’re good at and get that positive result.”
