Report: Mansfield Town U18s 6-2 Iron U18s

3 May 2019

The Iron’s Under-18 side lost 6-2 away at Mansfield Town last night in their final match of the season.

Luca Chadli and a Trialist got the two goals for Scunthorpe, but they were beaten by a strong Mansfield team.

United started the game brightly, but the first big chance fell to the home side. They attacked down the right-side, before a header went straight at Ben Crosher.

Fourteen minutes into the match, Levi Gallimore had the Iron’s first opportunity of the match. He was played through on goal, however their goalkeeper produced a fine save to deny Gallimore.

Chadli then went close to opening the scoring when he shot just wide of the target after good build-up play.

The Iron then counter-attacked from a Mansfield corner. They broke quickly up the pitch, but Cameron Wilson’s effort went just wide.

On the 30th minute, Mansfield got their first goal of their match. A cross from the right-wing was headed into the net by their striker at the back post to make it 1-0.

Harry Baker was then put through into the box five minutes later, but his shot flew wide of the post.

The Stags then doubled their lead shortly after. A corner was cleared to the edge of the box and a Mansfield player struck a volley into the top right corner of the goal.

In the 41st minute, Mansfield scored their third, after a cross was tapped home at the far post.

Just before half-time, Chadli got a goal back for the Iron. He cut inside and struck his shot into the bottom corner of the goal.

After the break, however, Mansfield regained their three-goal lead. A free-kick was curled into the area, which was headed past Crosher.

Mansfield’s striker then got onto the scoresheet again in the 56th minute with a header, before they made it 6-1 nine minutes later. A speculative ball over the top was controlled and put past the Iron’s goalkeeper.

Five minutes later, Scunthorpe got one goal back to make it 6-2. A Trialist made a great run from the halfway line and then converted with a shot into the top corner.

Scunthorpe United: Crosher, Baker, Trialist (Haywood, 75’), Silva (Boswell, 83’), Harrison, Lobley, Wilson, Shrimpton (Kemp, 87’), Wilkinson, Gallimore, Chadli (Strouther, 75’).
