The Leicester loanee ran onto Lee Novak’s headed pass to fire the ball into the net in the second-half, helping the Iron to a 4-1 victory at Glanford Park on Tuesday.
Stuart McCall’s side will now travel to Fratton Park on Saturday to face fourth placed Portsmouth.
However, Thomas believes the Iron are going there with full of confidence after an impressive win.
He told iFollow Iron: “I think it was important that we got the win first and foremost.
“They were around us in the table and we are not too many points away from that sort of area we do not want to be in.
“Portsmouth are a team up there and going away to Fratton Park will be a tough test for us, but we are going there after a good win.
“The lads are full of confidence and the spirits are high. Hopefully we can do the job.”
Thomas netted his second goal in three matches and he is hoping he can continue to help the team.
“I was happy to score,” said Thomas.
“I worked hard on Tuesday, but I thought the quality from myself was missing at times.
“I was pleased to get the goal and hopefully I can add more in the weeks to come.
“It was important for me and I like to contribute in any way I can.”
After the Southend win, Scunthorpe moved up to 15th in the Sky Bet League One.
However, Portsmouth will provide a tough test for the Iron and Thomas is focused on what his side can do.
The 21-year-old said: “We have got to concentrate on ourselves and play our game.
“When we played them earlier in the season, we were unlucky not to win the game, but I know we can compete with them and I am sure on Saturday we will give them a good test.”
