Matthew Donohue to referee AFC Wimbledon home clash

28 March 2019

Matthew Donohue will be the man in the middle for the Iron's home league clash against AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

The Manchester-based official will travel to Glanford Park for his 33rd game of the campaign and 11th in Sky Bet League One. The current campaign is Donohue's first in the EFL.

His first game of the campaign was a League Two affair between Colchester United and Port Vale which the hosts won 2-0. On that day, he issued four yellow cards.

Meanwhile, his most recent league game came on March 9th when he showed three yellow cards in Bradford City's 3-1 victory over Peterborough United at the Northern Commercials Stadium.

In recent seasons, he has gone from strength-to-strength with three successive promotions. Spending just one season at Level 2B (National League North) and another at Level 2A (National League) he has shown just how much he has developed his skills in the lead up to his promotion to the EFL at the end of last season.

Donohue refereed the Iron back in January when the side were 2-1 winners over Walsall at the Banks's Stadium. Funso Ojo and Lee Novak netted the goals in a game which saw three cautions.

The Primary School teacher is yet to take charge of AFC Wimbledon, so Saturday will be his first involvement in a Wombles fixture.

In 2017-18, he took charge of 20 games, issuing 47 yellow cards and two reds. So far in this campaign, he has officiated in 32 encounters, showing 116 yellows and seven red cards.

On Saturday, he will be assisted by Simon Clayton and Danny Gratton, while Gareth Mellor has been appointed as the fourth official.
