Ben Toner to referee Southend United home clash

11 March 2019

Ben Toner will be the man in the middle for the Iron's home league clash against Southend United on Tuesday.

The Lancashire-based official will travel to Glanford Park for his 30th game of the campaign and ninth in Sky Bet League One. The current campaign is Toner's fourth in the EFL.

His first game of the campaign was Tranmere Rovers' 1-0 home win against Cheltenham Town on the second weekend of the season. On that occasion, he showed one yellow card. Meanwhile, his latest encounter came at the weekend when he oversaw the League Two encounter between Carlisle United and Swindon Town which ended with three cautions in the 2-1 home win.

He was last appointed to an Iron game back in May when he took charge of the 2-0 home victory over Plymouth Argyle. On that occasion, he showed just one caution. In total, he's refereed United on seven occasions, showing 16 yellow cards and no reds.

Meanwhile, he's refereed Southend United on just one previous occasion. That came back in October 2015 when the Shrimpers drew 1-1 with Gillingham away from home. He issued seven yellow cards in the game.

In 2017-18, he took charge of 37 games, issuing 105 yellow cards and five reds. So far in this campaign, he has officiated in 29 encounters, showing 80 yellows and five red cards.

On Tuesday, he will be assisted by David Avent and Ian Smedley, while Nick Hopton has been appointed as the fourth official.
