Officially joining the Iron on a season-long loan shortly after the full-time whistle, unveiled as Trialist A beforehand, Slater sealed his first victory for the club.

“The manager said before and at half-time that he wanted the win so I was very pleased with the 2-0,” said Slater.

“All the lads were, as well. It was good for me to get out there and see what they were about. It was a really successful day for me.”

The Sheffield United loanee was on the scoresheet for the Iron against the Imps, with some individual brilliance on show, but Slater insisted it was a stroke of luck.

“They don’t come around very often! I might have got lucky with the touch but sometimes you need a bit of luck," he added.

It was a good test for the Iron against Danny Cowley’s side, who were promoted to the third tier last term after topping the table in League Two.

“They went up last year out of League Two as champions so that’s what we’ve been up against today. We’ve shown that when it comes to it, we can do it so we just kick on really," he continued.

After starting against the Imps, the 19-year-old couldn’t call whether he had done enough to earn a place in Paul Hurst’s starting XI as the Iron host Swindon Town on Saturday.

“That’s up to the gaffer! I work hard in training as well so we’ll see what comes of it," he said.

Nonetheless, Slater is chomping at the bit to return to EFL action at Glanford Park now the Iron’s pre-season schedule has concluded.

He concluded: “Everyone’s waiting for that. You’re just building up in pre-season to get the season started, so bring on Saturday!”
