Tony McMahon signs on loan

3 January 2019

Scunthorpe United have completed the signing of defender Tony McMahon on loan until the end of the season.

The 32-year-old right-back arrives from fellow League One side Oxford United and will remain with the Iron until May.

McMahon, who was born in Bishop Auckland, started his senior career with Middlesbrough, where he scored three goals in 137 appearances over an eight-year period.

He enjoyed three spells with Blackpool, along with stays at both Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United before arriving at Bradford City for the first time in March 2015. His successful loan spell, in which he scored once in eight league appearances, was made permanent that summer. This was the start of a three-year stint.

While with the Bantams, the defender worked under current Iron boss Stuart McCall during his tenure as manager at the Northern Commercials Stadium. In total, during his permanent stay at Bradford, he made 119 appearances and scored 13 goals before a switch to Oxford United in the summer.

McMahon has made a total of 13 appearances for the U’s, scoring in his latest game for the club in their 3-0 victory over the Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s side in the Checkatrade Trophy last month.
