Thomas: We dug deep to get the result

Fresh from setting up Lee Novak for the winning goal in last Saturday’s victory against Walsall, attacker George Thomas is looking forward to the prospect of looking to make it five wins in a row for United when Sunderland visit Glanford Park this weekend.

The 21-year-old, on loan from Leicester City, was pleased with the manner of the 2-1 success at the Banks’s Stadium, as Scunthorpe continued their excellent recent run.

He told iFollow Iron: “We’ll look at the Walsall game and see where we need to improve, and then put it away and get ready for Sunderland. Hopefully it will be a good atmosphere and we’ll get the win for the fans.

“It was one of those hard-fought wins. We’d previously won three on the bounce so to get another result on Saturday was important to keep the momentum going. It was against a good team as well.

“It was a bobbly pitch and chances were hard to come by, but they were two great finishes and two great goals (by Funso Ojo and Novak). We had to dig in to get the result.”

He added: “I was a bit disappointed with my own performance. I had done well in the last few weeks and wanted to come to Walsall and influence the game more. I was pleased to feed Novs, who finished it really well as he does.”

Thomas says confidence is naturally high in the changing room right now as United look to continue climbing the division.

He said: “That’s football, when you do get goals you get confidence. The defence have been unreal in the past four games too. They’ve been good results for us and hopefully it’s the start of something.

“Away games are always tough but to get the result and win against a team around us in the league was important. We’ve leapfrogged them now and need to kick on from here during the next few games.

“A few weeks ago we were in a bit of a bad place, but the lads have responded well. We’ve had new additions as well, which is positive for the squad. They are good players and have quality. They’ll keep us all on our toes. We have to keep our performances up or we’ll find ourselves out of the team. You want healthy competition and it’ll only help the team.”
